Web rings are sites covering the same general subject matter who set up an organized online group to promote each other's wares. Each site links to the next one, or you can jump randomly to any other member site until you finish where you started. Ring members usually display a graphic on their front page saying something like "Member of the Jack Russell Web Ring". These graphics encourage people to look at other members of the ring.

Web rings are a splendid idea. Not only are they free to join, but they are usually devoted solely to increasing awareness of sites like yours. Surfers who have stumbled across one Jack Russell Web site are likely to want to look at another one.

If a ring doesn't exist for your subject, don't despair. Despite your obviously deviant interests, you only need a couple of like-minded individuals to start your own ring.

How to join a Web ring
1 Find out if there's a Web ring devoted to your subject. There are currently around 40,000 to choose from. A comprehensive listing of subjects can be found at http://www.webring.com (home of the original Web ring). A search on "Jack Russell Terriers" produced dozens of sites, so there's almost bound to be a Web ring covering your subject.
2 Take a good look at the rings devoted to your subject. Choose one carefully. Does it look busy? Are there a lot of member sites? Does it look professionally run?
3 Find the home page of the ring (each member site should have a link to it), and follow the instructions to join. Each ring will have its own method, but typically it involves filling in a form, being e-mailed some HTML code by the owner, and pasting it into your home page. The code usually displays a graphic proclaiming you a member, and highlights other members of the ring.
